IELTS is a robust English language test that is taken by students for the purpose of higher education or migration to foreign countries where English is the native language or where the educational instruction is in English. IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System and is conducted by over 140 countries around the globe.
Both Paper based and computer delivered test cost Rs.17.000/-. Any changes will be updated in the IDP IELTS website.
School English has a fixed syllabus and probably a fixed set of questions to prepare for. Moreover, only writing skill is assessed. In IELTS, there is no syllabus and the test evaluates in-depth English communication based on reading, listening, writing and speaking skills.
IELTS test has 4 modules namely listening, reading, writing and speaking. Speaking test is a 1 to 1 session with an IELTS examiner. The written test runs for 2 hours 45 minutes.
Only IDP Australia conducts this test in India. British Council has stopped conducting the test in India from July 2021 onwards.
There is no limit to the number attempts for the IELTS test.
A valid passport is required to register for IELTS.
Unlike other exams which are graded as percentage or percentile, IELTS is graded as a band score between 1 to 9 with band 1 being the lowest score and band 9 being the highest. All the 4 modules (reading, listening, writing and speaking) are graded by this system and the average of the 4 band scores is calculated as the final score.
Different scores are required by thousands of institutes in different countries. Moreover, the score requirement may also change from time to time. Many foreign universities have a greater autonomy and decide to follow their own patterns. Hence, candidates need to find their individual score requirements (even specific module band scores). An IELTS trainer will not be aware of all these details.
IELTS scores are valid for a period of 2 years.

The are two types of IELTS tests namely Pen and paper based test and computer delivered test. For Pen and paper based test, answers need to be written on paper, while for the computer test, answers have to be typed onto a computer screen. Those who are proficient with typing and have good navigational skills can choose this test. Computer delivered tests are conducted every day and results come faster, whereas paper tests are conducted only twice a week and is suitable for those who cannot type fast.
