Tips on Student Life Abroad

  1. Usually students take a loan prior to commencing studies abroad.
  2. Money transfer happens between respective banks in home country and abroad.
  3. It is possible to open a foreign bank account in India before flying out to speed up the process.
  4. Remember the first month abroad will be an information overload regarding course work, accommodation, shopping etc.
  5. Ensure smooth transaction of money from India to foreign university to avoid any disruption to your studies.
  6. Loan amount gets sanctioned by banks based on the worth of the collateral. Eg – Property, assets.
  7. University accommodation would be more expensive compared to off-site.
  8. When you sign contract with landlords, be aware of the terms and conditions. Check whether the rent covers heating, internet, water etc.
  9. You may do part-time jobs to help you with living expenses. However, it will not be sufficient to cover tuition fees unless you have been offered a fee waiver or scholarship. Do not go abroad relying on part time jobs.
  10. You may work unrestricted during holiday times such as during Christmas or summer holidays.
  11. Universities that allow extensive working during course time are probably not of good reputation.
  12. While traveling abroad have all your essentials with you such as extra spectacles, medicines, your favourite masalas, spices etc.
  13. It is advisable to learn cooking to some extent. Remember only big cities will have authentic Indian restaurants.
  14. Warm clothing is important when traveling to cold countries. Living in Sheffield, I had occasional nose bleeds as the weather is often wet and windy there.
  15. During snowfall, it is advisable to wear snow boots especially when walking down steep slopes.
  16. Foreign education can be stressful. Students need to have a good balance between studies and social life while managing their budget carefully.
  17. Foreign countries offer a range of discounts for students such as product discounts, transport, entertainment etc. Students need to be aware of this after landing there in the foreign country.
  18. Try to integrate into local communities if there is a chance to do so. The rural side of these countries will be quite fascinating.
  19. Avoid flaunting your valuables such as jewellery watches, gadgets in public.
  20. Avoid talking loudly in Indian languages in public. The locals may not like it.
  21. Find out how safe the locality is. Some areas may have local gangs.
  22. Try to avoid any sort of confrontation with strangers who you feel are not genuine.
  23. Avoid solitary walks at night.
  24. Don’t jump queues.
  25. Avoid going to night clubs. If you do so, it is at your own risk.
  26. Most universities have their own partying events at the weekends within their university premises, which are closely monitored by the security staff.
  27. Insurance cover is must for traveling abroad for studies. I had a dental impaction of my wisdom tooth which was completely covered by insurance.
